“Well, there’s a piece of Maria in every song that I sing.” ~Counting Crows
I’ve had the iPod on shuffle this evening while I worked on my painting, and when that song came on, I paused. I thought about what it means, what it could mean. In this context I’d say it’s safe to say he’s talking about lost love. But what if it meant that in everything you do, all your work, it’s not just you. It’s those you’ve loved and lost, those you still love, those who’ve touched you. It makes your art so much bigger than yourself. And I think I like that.
In class last night, my typography professor told us that art is an internal problem, while design is an external problem. I understand what he’s saying, but I think that I know some designers who would disagree. And in many ways I disagree. I think every creative thing you do can’t help but stem in part from an internal problem, because we take external problems and bring them into ourselves. That’s how we solve them. We mull them over, we bring all our experiences to the table, and we come up with a solution that we like and that we hope others will like. That may even touch others.
